What being autónomo in Spain involves

Four things to keep up with. We take care of all of them.

Every quarter

VAT return (Modelo 303) and income tax prepayment (Modelo 130), by the 20th of April, July and October and the 30th of January.

Every year

Annual VAT summary (Modelo 390), the declaration of operations above €3,005.06 with the same client or supplier (Modelo 347) and your income tax return (Renta).

Every month

Your Social Security contribution (cuota de autónomo), now based on your real net income. We check your bracket so you do not overpay or get a bill later.

If you have clients abroad

EU VAT number (ROI/VIES) and the Modelo 349 for EU business clients. Clients outside the EU usually mean no Spanish VAT on your invoice.

Most problems we fix come from a rushed registration: the wrong activity code, the wrong VAT regime or a missing EU VAT number. We do it properly from day one.

Freelancer questions we hear every week

How much tax does a freelancer pay in Spain?

It depends on your income and expenses. You charge 21% VAT on most invoices to Spanish clients and pay it to Hacienda each quarter, minus the VAT on your business expenses. You also prepay 20% of your quarterly profit as income tax, and the final amount is settled in your annual return at progressive rates. On top of that you pay a monthly Social Security contribution based on your net income. On our first call we give you an estimate for your case.

Do I charge VAT to clients outside Spain?

Usually not, if your client is a business. For EU business clients you invoice without Spanish VAT (reverse charge), but you must be registered in the EU VAT system (ROI/VIES) and file the Modelo 349. For business clients outside the EU, services are generally not subject to Spanish VAT. Private individuals are different: ask us about your case.

What is the 15% (or 7%) on invoices?

When you invoice a Spanish company or another freelancer as a professional, they withhold part of your invoice (IRPF retención) and pay it to Hacienda for you: 15% in general, or 7% in the year you start and the next two. That money counts towards your annual income tax. It does not apply to clients abroad or to private individuals.

Can I deduct my home office, phone or laptop?

Expenses directly linked to your activity, with a proper invoice in your name, are generally deductible: equipment, software, coworking, professional services. A home office is deductible only in part and under specific rules. We go through your expenses every quarter and tell you what counts.

I came with a digital nomad visa. Can you help?

Yes, with the tax side once you have your visa: registration as autónomo, quarterly returns, your annual return and, if you qualify, the Beckham Law. We do not process visa applications.

I am behind on my quarterly returns. What now?

Do not wait for a letter from Hacienda. If you file late on your own initiative, you pay a surcharge that starts at 1% and grows with time, which is much less than a penalty. Tell us which quarters are missing and we will give you a fixed price to catch up.
