Are you tax resident in Spain?
It decides whether Spain taxes all your income or only what you earn here. You are resident if any of these applies:
- You spend more than 183 days in Spain in the calendar year, or
- Your main business or economic interests are in Spain, or
- Your spouse (not legally separated) and minor children live in Spain — then Hacienda presumes you are resident too
Just moved or about to leave?
The year you arrive or leave is the one most often filed wrong. Tell us your dates and we will tell you where you are resident and what to file.

Tax return questions
Do I have to file a tax return in Spain?
If you are tax resident in Spain you are taxed on your worldwide income and, in most cases, you must file the annual return (Renta, Modelo 100). Employees with a single Spanish employer and a salary below the legal threshold may be exempt, but filing is often worth it to get money back. We tell you which applies to you.
When is the tax return season?
Every year from early April to 30 June, for the income of the previous calendar year. If you have to pay, you can split the amount in two instalments: 60% in June and 40% in November.
Will I be taxed twice on income from my home country?
Usually not. Spain has double tax treaties with most countries. Depending on the type of income, it is taxed in only one country or Spain gives you a credit for the tax paid abroad. We apply the right treaty article and keep the paperwork that proves it.
What is the Modelo 720?
An information return for residents with more than €50,000 abroad in any of three categories: bank accounts, securities and investments, or property. It is filed from January to 31 March. Crypto held abroad goes in a separate form, the Modelo 721. It does not mean extra tax, but it must be filed on time.
I did not file in previous years. Can you fix it?
Yes. Hacienda can review the last four years. Filing late on your own initiative only carries a surcharge, which is much cheaper than a penalty after an inspection. We give you a fixed price per year before we start.
